Preface to the Edition of 1887.
The Biographical Directory of the Railway Officials of America was first issued in 1885. It was at once found to be of great value for reference, being the only available medium for obtaining informa- tion of the history of those who are conducting the various depart- ments of railway management and operation. The many official changes and additions which have been going on in the last three years have made a new and completely revised edition necessary, and this volume is now presented to meet the demand. It is modeled on the plan which proved so acceptable in the first volume, but it is other- wise in every respect a new work, every name having been taken up separately and made the subject of research and correspondence, large numbers being di'opped on account of death or retirement from serv- ice, while in the case of very many of those remaining changes were found to have occurred in their position and history. In all respects this second edition, when compared with that of 1885, furnishes im- pressive evidence of the many and rapid changes which are taking place in the personnel of American railway officials.
The number of general and division railway officers named in this volume is 4,639, showing an increase of 1,700 names compared with the first edition, and the number of pages has been increased from 276 to 416, involving, of course, a great increase of labor and ex- pense. The body of the work is occupied by concise biographical records of railway service, with a supplementary list giving recent official changes and some records received too late for mention in their appropriate places. This is followed with an alphabetical list of all general and division officers whose records are not given in the preceding pages. That their biographies are omitted is chiefly due to the neglect of these officers to respond to requests for the necessary information, though it is also to be noted that in many cases the offi- cial career has been so brief or so little varied that there' is no occasion for a biographical sketch. For example, most presidents, secretaries and treasurers have occupied no other official position, and hence have

no railway record to give. A list is appended of prominent railway officers who have deceased since the tirst Biograj)hical Directory was prepared. It will be found of much interest as a mournful reminder of the fact that this generation of eminent men is rapidly passing away.
The scope and purpose of this work were set forth in the preface to the first volume, fi'om which it may be allowed to make the following extracts :
" The railway army in America numbers about 600,000 men, com- manded by some 5,000 general and division officers, in whose official positions and location frequent changes are being made; and yet hitherto there lias been no attainable information by which, knowing a railway officer's name, his railway connection and address could be learned. The primary object of this work is to give an alphabetical list of the railway officers of the United States, Canada and Mexico, with present title, name of railway, and postoffice address. That such a list, aside from its personal interest, will be of very great practical value to railway men and to the many thousands in various branches of trade and manufacture who have biisiness relations with railway officers needs no argument. In innumerable cases it happens that a railway officer's name becomes known by means of a letter, a telegram, or a chance introduction to another railway man, to a man- ufacturer or to some other lousiness man, without definite information as to his connection. Often his road is mentioned only by its initials, or, still more frequently, is not given at all, so that the excellent Official Guide, which is indexed only by roads, gives no aid in locating him; even if the road is given, the name desired may not be in the pub- lished list of officers. Only an alphabetical list will supply the infor- mation, and such a list is here for the first time given. This is the first distinguishing characteristic of the "Biographical Directory of the Railway Officials of America.'''
' ' The second characteristic peculiar to this work alone is its record of the railway history of the officers named. Railway records have only begun to be made. The tirst generation of railway men has hardly passed away, and yet the history of most of the railway officers of to-day is a record of many changes and great progress — a record, too, full of encouragement to those who are ambitious to rise in their chosen profession. The fact that nearly all of the great railway man- agers of to-day have risen, by their own exertions, from the humblest ranks in the profession, is the best evidence that other young men may do likewise. ' ' What man has done man can do, ' ' is the inspir- ing incentive to be gained from these pages by the ambitious and per- severing.
" It is easy to see that the contents and value of this Biographical Directory will increase vastly as the years go on and the career of

each officer is lengthened out and the number of names is continually increased. The sad record of the dead, too, will form a feature of growing interest, as the intellectual greatness of the men who become eminent in railway management and operation is more and more ap- preciated by the world, and as railroading becomes more and more a recognized science. These men do a great and benificent work for their day and generation. Their names and histories should not be allowed to jDerish as soon as they pass from the scenes of their exciting and wearing activities. From these considerations it will be seen that the biographical feature of this work is destined to be of very great and increasing vahae and interest."
It is the belief of the editors that this second volume will be found still more vahiable than the first, and that its reception will justify the enormous amount of labor which has been involved in its prepa- ration, extending over many months, and involving the work of many hands, and the preparation of probably a hundred thousand commu- nications. To the co-operation of most of the railway officials of the continent the editors are indebted for the accomplishment of their task. It is hoped that in the next issue of this Directory every re- cord will be complete.
]I^^Special attention is called to the fact that a considerable num- ber of additions and changes made after the body of the work was in press will be found in the appendix, bringing the record down to the latest practicable date.
